Allied Waste Reports Turnaround From Fourth Quarter 2003
Allied Waste Inc. has reported small fourth-quarter profits, a reversal of a large loss a year ago. The company reported fourth-quarter earnings of $12 million, or 4 cents per share, as compared with the year-ago loss of $523.2 million, or $2.38 a share. That charge included a $2.34 per share charge to convert preferred stock and retire debt. Asbestos Companies Criticize Senate Fund Plan
A group of asbestos defendant companies and insurers has publicly declared its opposition to a Senate proposal that would curb asbestos claims. The group sent a letter dated Jan. 28 to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) criticizing plans for a compensation fund to replace asbestos suits. The group, which calls itself the Coalition for Asbestos Reform, recommends that rather than set up a $140 billion fund, the Senate should consider other solutions, such as legislation setting medical criteria for asbestos victims to bring claims against companies. Metal Management Reports Third-Quarter Profits
Metal Management Inc. has announced that its third-quarter profit more than doubled on increased demand for scrap metal. For the three months ended Dec. 31, net income rose to $29.5 million, or $1.19 per share, from $12.6 million, or 54 cents per share, a year ago. Sales grew 74 percent to $447.6 million from $257.7 million.
