Pennsylvania Kicks Off Mercury Switch Recovery Program

The Pennsylvania Environmental Protection has launched a new partnership with scrap dealers, the automotive-recycling industry and environmental groups to recycle 600 pounds of mercury in the next two years in Pennsylvania. The program will achieve this goal by removing mercury-containing switches in salvaged cars. The state has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AERC Recycling Solutions, Bethlehem Apparatus Co. VERSAR Reports First-Quarter Financial Results

VERSAR, Inc. (Amex: VSR) has announced the financial results for the first quarter of FY2005 ended October 1, 2004. Gross revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2005 was $19.2 million, a 40% increase from the same period last year. The increase was attributable to larger construction contracts that the Company is performing. Covanta Virginia Incinerator Wins Star Designation

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (www.osha.gov) will honor the City of Alexandria (Virginia) and the County of Arlington's 975 ton-per-day waste-to-energy facility, operated by Covanta Energy Corporation (www.covantaenergy.com), with a "STAR" designation, the agency's highest honor given to power generating facilities for outstanding health and safety practices. The designation is given to less than one percent of all worksites in the United States and comes following participation in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program. OfficeMax Adds 100-Percent Recycled Paper

OfficeMax, Incorporated (NYSE: OMX) is adding a new 100 percent post-consumer paper to help contract business customers meet their environmental goals. Starting in 2005, OfficeMax will offer its North American business customers a 100 percent post-consumer paper that is manufactured with wind power and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Mohawk Color Copy 100% Recycled paper is manufactured without the use of chlorine and chlorine compounds, and is manufactured by Mohawk Paper Mills, the only mill in the U.S. using wind energy to make paper. Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG) has reported net income of $62.5 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, for the three months ended September 30, 2004, versus net income of $44.7 million, or $0.28 per diluted share, for the same period last year. EarthFirst, Oak Ridge Roll Out New Tire Destruction Process

EarthFirst Technologies (www.earthfirsttech.com) and Oak Ridge National Laboratories (www.ornl.gov) have completed a five-year R&D effort to develop a new recycling technology for tires and other solid wastes, known as the Catalystic Activated Vacuum Distillation (CAVD) processing plant. The proprietary process recycles tires by heating the rubber in an oxygen-less chamber, then extracting the valuable constituent elements that originally made up the tire. A CAVD processing plant can recycle 80,000 pounds of tires per day. PC Scale Wins New York City Sanitation Software Contract

PC Scale, Inc. has won a contract to provide customized point-of-sale software for driver-assisted scale data management systems for New York City Department of Sanitation transfer stations. PC Scale will provide software and peripheral devices such as driver-assisted terminals, radio frequency units and proximity readers for both the transfer station and adjoining compost facility at the Fresh Kills Landfill, located on the western shore of Staten Island. The Staten Island Transfer Station is expected be operational by early 2005. PC Scale will also provide software for four marine transfer stations designed to ship waste by barge.
