The New York City Department of Sanitation (www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/dos) is demolishing its incinerator in southwest Brooklyn to make way for a new transfer station. The facility has stood on the Brooklyn waterfront since 1961, and burned an average of 300 tons of waste a day for 30 years. City crews expect to completely clean the incinerator's area by November. The site will be paved over while Mayor Michael Bloomberg seeks approval for a citywide management plan that would include the Brooklyn transfer station.
