KBR Awarded EPC Contract by KiOR, Inc. for Biomass-to-Renewable Crude Project in the United States
KBR (NYSE: KBR) announced today that it has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract by KiOR, Inc. (KiOR) to build a first-of-its-kind biomass-to-renewable crude facility to be located in Columbus, Miss. The facility is designed to process approximately 500 tons per day of wood biomass and produce over 11 million gallons of fuel per year.
KBR will provide engineering and procurement services, as well as direct hire construction for the commercialization of KiOR's proprietary technology, which is designed to convert biomass into drop-in biofuels such as gasoline and diesel blendstocks. The facility is designed to produce renewable fuels from wood biomass, offering a viable solution to ease our dependence on foreign oil, reduce greenhouse gas emission and create high-quality jobs in rural communities. The unit will be based on the design and construction of traditional fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units, and thus KiOR will benefit from KBR's breadth of FCC know-how and broad ranging portfolio of technology scale-ups.
"KBR is proud to collaborate with KiOR on this first-of-its kind renewable crude oil project in North America," said John Quinn, President, KBR Downstream. "The competitive advantage KBR can offer our newest client lies in our unique portfolio, which includes a long-established, wide range of expertise in the process technology and EPC sectors, as well as the competency and quality of our project teams. We look forward to the successful commercialization of KiOR's biomass-to-biofuels technology."
