New Recycling Organization Forming
In an effort to raise a larger umbrella than afforded by recent National Recycling Coalition activity or the proposed takeover by Keep America Beautiful, a new non-profit recycling organization is being created. Called the Recycling Organizations of North America, the group is a cross-section of interests and is emerging as a new coalition of recyclers. Articles of Incorporation for RONA have been filed with the Colorado Attorney General's Office.
The group's name distinguishes it from existing organizations and certainly from the structure being proposed by Keep America Beautiful. Its plural use of Organizations underscores the group's inclusiveness. All states, both those that are affiliated with NRC and those that are not, are being invited and many appear eager to be part of a reinvented national organization. Regional and other recycling and related sustainability organizations have also voiced interest in being part of the broad-based coalition. The group will also serve a North American base that brings the impressive accomplishments in Canada within the group's large tent.
RONA is rising from growing concern among past and current recycling leadership for change. Observers have likened it to a quick awakening of sleeping dragons who are ready to mobilize new leadership. Already, It's attracting the interests of a rapidly growing number of recycling professionals, companies, and organizations from the US and Canada.
Organizers of the group are proceeding apace with the existing Save the NRC effort (www.SAVETHENRC.org). It is likely the group will continue to gain interest leading up to the NRC membership vote in two weeks since many consider it at least as viable an option as reorganizing the NRC. During a series of recent and sometimes animated conference calls, the phrase: "finally, an alternative" brings a sense of purpose and direction. The group is counting that this alternative will engender the same enthusiasm from more than 3,000 NRC members when they cast their votes.
