DEP Issues Permit for Veolia ES Greentree Landfill Expansion in Elk County

The Department of Environmental Protection has approved the application by Veolia ES Greentree Landfill to expand its municipal waste landfill in Fox Township, Elk County.

The decision to issue the expansion permit caps a 21-month-long assessment of environmental issues and technical details of the project.

The permit will allow Veolia to increase the existing disposal area by approximately 104 new acres and increase the overall permit area from 986 acres to 1,148 acres. The site now has approximately 230 acres of permitted disposal area.

The permit sets an average daily waste volume of 5,500 tons per day, which is also the daily volume under the landfill's existing permit. Based on the permit average, the proposed expansion would provide approximately 10 years of additional disposal capacity.

Veolia submitted the permit application on Feb. 20, 2007.

The facility has been in operation since 1986.
