Environmental Industry Associations Supports Natural Gas Vehicle Programs

On November 13, the Environmental Industry Associations (EIA), Washington, D.C., sent a letter to Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, supporting funding by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for natural gas vehicle research and development programs.

"Natural gas vehicles have a huge potential to displace the use of petroleum, especially in high-fuel use commercial urban fleet vehicles such as those used to collect recyclables and solid waste," said Bruce Parker, EIA's President and CEO. "However, the DOE has shifted its emphasis to long-term, high-risk vehicle activities stalling the increased use of natural gas vehicles. Without research and development programs, the use of natural gas cannot be fully realized."

The use of natural gas has the potential to move the United States away from its dependency of foreign oil. EIA emphasized that the solid waste and recycling industry views the development of transportation technologies that operate on non-petroleum alternative fuels to be a critical national goal and responsibility.

About the Environmental Industry Associations

EIA is the trade association that represents the private sector solid waste and recycling industry through its two sub-associations, the National Solid Wastes Management Association whose members are collection, transfer, and disposal companies, and the Waste Equipment Technology Association serving manufacturers and distributors.
