Waste Management, Inc.'s Caldwell Elected Chairman of Keep America Beautiful's National Board of Directors

Barry H. Caldwell, senior vice president, government affairs and corporate communications for Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE: WMI), has been named chairman of the board of directors of Keep America Beautiful (KAB). Caldwell assumes the chairmanship vacated by Ralph Scozzafava, formerly of Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company.

"Keep America Beautiful is delighted to have someone of Barry Caldwell's stature and experience take the reins of chairman of our national board of directors," said G. Raymond Empson, president of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. "The leadership he has provided as our board representative of Waste Management has been vital to our organization in achieving its mission of creating cleaner, greener, more beautiful communities across America."

In 2006 and 2007, the Waste Management Charitable Foundation has provided a total $435,000 in pass-through grants that have directly supported local Keep America Beautiful affiliates in their efforts to prevent litter, reduce waste, promote recycling, and improve communities through beautification projects. Additionally, the company has been a significant sponsor of the organization's signature event, the Great American Cleanup™, providing in-kind equipment, manpower and logistical support to millions of volunteers in local efforts from coast to coast.

Caldwell is responsible for leading Waste Management's government affairs, corporate communications, community relations and public service sector services. He is a member of the company's senior leadership team and reports to Waste Management's CEO, David Steiner. Caldwell, who has been an active KAB director since 2005, joined Waste Management from CIGNA Corporation, the Philadelphia-based health insurance and retirement products provider, where he was Vice President, Government Relations. Prior to CIGNA, he was Vice President, Federal Affairs for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, and also worked for United States Senator Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) as Counsel to the Senator and later as his Chief of Staff. Caldwell began his career as an attorney with Kutak Rock & Campbell and then Cole Corette & Abrutyn, both Washington, D.C., law firms.

"Keep America Beautiful, just like Waste Management, is seeking to expand stewardship and educational programs that impact a community's long-term quality of life," said Caldwell. "I'm very proud to be appointed as chair of KAB and look forward to helping lead it to even greater success in achieving its mission."
