St. Lucie County Florida hopes to soon finalize its land lease agreement with Atlanta-based Geoplasma LLC. to move forward with the planned plasma-arc gasification plant. The $450 million facility will be built on county land where it will process county waste but will be built and financed by Geoplasma. The agreement has boiled down to details about insurance and environmental concerns particularly mercury emissions which the company promises will be well below state guidelines. The target startup date is for the summer of 2008. The facility will be built on the former 331-acre St. Lucie County landfill where it will process waste from the county and reclaimed from the landfill. The process involves heating the waste some 7,000 degrees with electrically generated plasma torches, converting the material to gas and a slag byproduct. The gas can then be used to generate energy while the slag can be made into brick and road materials.
