Ohio EPA Issues Permits for American Landfill Expansion

American Landfill, Inc., is permitted to proceed with an expansion of its solid waste landfill located on State Route 44 north of Waynesburg (Stark County).

Ohio EPA has issued final solid waste and air permits to American to expand the landfill up to 160 acres laterally and 178 acres vertically. When complete, the expansion will create up to 84.4 million cubic yards of additional disposal capacity and extend the life of the landfill at least 18 years.

Prior to the final decision, Ohio EPA and the Canton City Health Department's Air Pollution Control Division (Ohio EPA's contractual representative for air pollution issues in Stark County) performed comprehensive reviews of American's proposal to ensure it would be protective of human health and the environment.

Ohio EPA also considered all comments received during the public comment period and at the February 2, 2006, public hearing at Sandy Valley High School. A written response to public comments is available at: www.epa.state.oh.us/pic/citizen/respond.html.

The solid waste permit is available for review at Ohio EPA's Northeast District Office in Twinsburg by first calling (330) 963-1200. The air permit is available at the Canton City Health Department's Air Pollution Control Division by first calling (330) 489-3385.

Issuance of the permits can be appealed to the Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC). Appeals for many permits must be filed within 30 days of issuance; therefore, Ohio EPA recommends that anyone wishing to file an appeal promptly contact ERAC at (614) 466-8950 for more information.
