The Atlanta City Council (apps.atlantaga.gov/citycoul/council.htm) has voted to enter into two contracts to send the city's 250,000 annual tons of waste to transfer stations in Fulton and Cobb counties. The city is under pressure to find a home for its waste, as its only landfill, the Live Oak facility in DeKalb County (www.co.dekalb.ga.us), will close on Dec. 1. But Fulton officials said they plan to fight the proposal, contending that the city did not effectively communicate with the county that Atlanta waste would be coming into Fulton. Under the plan, Republic Services (www.republicservices.com) and Advanced Disposal (www.advanceddisposal.com) would be paid a total of $7 million ayear to handle the city's waste.
