SEC Will Improve Environmental Liability Tracking

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will improve tracking of disclosure of corporate environmental costs through a searchable database at its website. The changes were prompted after the General Accountability Office found that the SEC does not systematically track environmental liabilities. Environmentalists and some investors have charged that many corporations do not fully disclose environmental liabilities, which could range from tens to hundreds of billions of dollars.
