The NAACP has joined in a legal fight to stop a proposed landfill in a Phoenix, Arizona suburb with African-American roots by accusing Maricopa County supervisors of civil rights violations. The NAACP filed a civil complaint against the Board of Supervisors in federal court, alleging supervisors violated civil rights by approving zoning laws and land use ordinances that have established the community as "the preferred destination for a string of environmentally undesirable projects." In December, supervisors voted 3-1 to allow Southpoint Environmental Services to build a landfill on 690 acres, the fourth such facility near Mobile.
