ABSTRACT:
Even as California
sits embroiled in staggering debt and a gubernatorial crisis virtually
unparalleled in American history, the state has taken a major step
forward in advancing the cause of electronic waste recycling. The
California Assembly has passed, and Governor Gray Davis has signed,
legislation designed to aid in the recycling of televisions, computers,
and other potentially toxic electronic hardware. The Assemblys
bill was forged through compromises between key electronics players
and environmentalists. Members of both sides are nonetheless expressing
displeasure with the final product, but California environmental
officials believe the law will serve its intended purpose and work
as a model for other states across the nation.
