SPECIAL REPORT: Waste-to-Energy
WTE Industry Meets Controversies, Challenges In United States And Abroad

ISSUE: Volume 12, Number 8 August 2002

ABSTRACT:

Burn or bury, bury or burn.
It’s the endless disposal debate in the solid waste industry—landfilling or incineration? Each has its advocates, each has its detractors. But while each form of disposal draws controversy in the early stages of individual projects’ development, waste-to-energy incinerators seem to face substantially more criticism over their lifespan than the average landfill. The reason could be as simple as out of sight, out of mind—landfills are passive disposal systems, accepting waste until there’s no more room. But incinerators are always active, always burning.
