ABSTRACT:
The major
consolidations of the late 1990s are over, and three companies stand
as the giants of the solid waste industry: Waste Management, Allied,
and Republic. As they go, so goes the industry. Solid Waste Digest
sat down with some of the major players at each of the three companies,
and discussed issues ranging from solid waste stocks to government
regulation.
All three companies
have learned lessonseither the hard way or by watching othersabout
stretching themselves too thin and expanding into non-solid-waste
lines. All three have completed plans to refocus themselves on their
solid waste lines, divesting themselves of noncore assets. The result
is likely to be renewed efficiency and a new dedication to customer
service.
