Rhode Island Could Increase Fees To Promote Recycling

Rhode Island Gov. Donald L. Carcieri (www.governor.state.ri.us) has proposed making local communities pay increased fees for dumping waste at the state's Central Landfill if they fail to recycle 20 percent of their waste. Under Carcieri's plan, communities that fail to reach 20 percent will have to pay $41.34 per ton; those that surpass the benchmark would pay only $32 per ton.
